Is dimethicone comedogenic? What the lists actually say
Dimethicone is a silicone polymer, and it is not on the pore-clogging list this site publishes: none of the 88 entries in the 2026-08-10 version is a silicone. It is the ingredient most often assumed to be flagged, which is a very different thing from being flagged, and the assumption is worth taking apart rather than repeating.

What dimethicone is
Dimethicone is the INCI name for polydimethylsiloxane, a synthetic polymer whose backbone alternates silicon and oxygen atoms, with two methyl groups attached to every silicon. It is made in a range of chain lengths, sold by viscosity, and the same name on two labels can mean a thin fluid or something close to a gum.
That chain length matters more than the name. A low-viscosity grade spreads and flashes off the skin quickly; a high-viscosity grade stays put and behaves like a soft film. Neither is a lipid, and neither shares a chemical family with the plant oils and fatty-acid esters that fill most of the published comedogenic list.
Labels also carry several relatives of dimethicone, and they are not interchangeable. The table below covers the names that turn up in the same ingredient lists and get treated as one material.

What dimethicone does in a formula
Dimethicone is in a formula for feel and for film. It spreads a product thinly and evenly, leaves a dry-slip finish instead of a greasy one, and forms a surface layer that slows water loss from the outer skin. Formulators reach for it when a cream needs to feel light without being thin.
Slip and spread
It lowers the drag of a cream or a primer so a small amount covers a whole face. Most of the "silky" sensation people describe in a moisturiser comes from this property.
A breathable-ish film
The polymer sits on the surface and slows water loss. Silicone films are gas-permeable — that is why silicone is used for membranes in other industries — so the layer is not a seal.
Optical blur
A thin even film fills the shadows around pores and fine lines, which reads as smoother skin under light. This is an optical effect on the surface, not a change to the pore.
Because the polymer is large and stays on the surface, it is also used as a carrier for pigments and as a barrier ingredient in products made for chapped or wind-exposed skin. None of this makes it inert on every face, but it does place it in a different category from the emollient esters that dominate the flagged list.
Is dimethicone on the published comedogenic lists?
Dimethicone is not on the list this page’s checker matches against, and it is not a borderline case: zero of the 88 entries in the 2026-08-10 version is a silicone of any kind. Published lists elsewhere either omit it or place it at the bottom of the scale, and none of them is issued by a regulator.

That absence deserves a careful reading. It is a statement about a list, not a verdict on the molecule. No FDA, EU or global body certifies comedogenic ratings, every circulating list is a private compilation, and two of them routinely disagree about the same ingredient.
The scale’s blind spot cuts both ways here. Ratings were produced by applying materials at or near full strength, so a formula holding five per cent of a flagged ester is judged by a number generated at one hundred per cent. How the 0–5 scale was built covers the rabbit-ear origin of those numbers.
An ingredient that was never put through the assay at all, which is the case for most silicones, has no number to quote in either direction. Absence from a list and a rating of zero are not the same result, and only one of the two is data.
Why the “suffocates the skin” claim persists
The suffocation story survives because it is a plausible-sounding translation of a real property. Dimethicone genuinely is occlusive, occlusion genuinely does slow water loss, and the leap from “slows water loss” to “traps everything and stops skin breathing” is short, vivid and wrong about the mechanism.
Skin does not take in oxygen through a moisturiser layer in any meaningful quantity, so a film on top of it is not competing with respiration. What the film does do is hold water in, and keep whatever is already on the surface in contact with that surface for longer.
Occlusive describes what a film does to water leaving the skin. Suffocating describes something skin does not do through a moisturiser in the first place — the two words are not synonyms.
That is the honest version of the concern, and it points at whatever sits underneath the silicone rather than at the silicone itself. A film applied over a flagged emollient keeps that emollient against the skin for longer, and nobody has published a measurement of what the pairing does.
The marketing layer keeps the story alive as well. “Silicone-free” works as a shelf claim only if silicones are understood as a problem, so the framing gets repeated wherever something is being sold on the strength of it, and repetition is what a claim needs when evidence is thin.
The remaining uncertainty is smaller and much duller. No controlled human study establishes what dimethicone at typical use levels does to comedone counts in either direction, and individual reports of a routine settling down after a silicone-heavy product was dropped are real, unexplained, and not a mechanism.
Dimethicone and fungal acne
Dimethicone is not a Malassezia trigger under the rule this site applies. The yeast associated with fungal acne metabolises fatty acids roughly in the C11–C24 range, dimethicone carries no fatty acids at all, and it is listed as an explicit exception alongside squalane, petrolatum and caprylic/capric triglyceride.
That exception exists because a rule based on name morphology would otherwise misfire. Anything matched purely on the shape of an ingredient name catches materials that the yeast cannot use, so the exceptions are written down and published rather than applied invisibly. A product containing dimethicone can still hold triggers, of course. Silicones often share a formula with plant oils, esters and polysorbates, and the check that matters is the whole list.
Who it suits, and who might reasonably skip it
Dimethicone suits people who want a light finish over an active, who find plant-oil emollients too heavy, or who are following the pore-clogging list closely and need an emollient that is not on it. It is also the usual reason a primer or a sunscreen spreads well over dry, flaking patches.
Skipping it is reasonable for several unglamorous reasons. Layered silicone products pill and roll under some gel textures, which wastes whatever was applied underneath, and the slippery finish is genuinely unpleasant to a lot of people. Texture preference needs no mechanism behind it to count.
Silicone films also want a surfactant or an oil cleanser to come off properly, so a water-only evening rinse leaves more behind than it appears to. And if an elimination trial has pointed twice at the same silicone-containing step, that observation about your own skin outranks any published list.
How to check a whole routine
Checking one product tells you little; the routine is what sits on skin overnight. Work through it one product at a time so the ingredient order stays intact, because order carries information about proportion that disappears the moment two lists are pasted together.

One product per check
Paste a single ingredient list at a time. Merging two products destroys the ordering and merges the counts, which makes the result unreadable.
Step 2
Paste the full list
Include everything to the end of the label, not just the first six names. Preservatives and fragrance components sit at the bottom and several of them are on the list.
Step 3
Read the unrecognised count first
A checker that could not read four names out of thirty is telling you about its own vocabulary. Not recognised never means the ingredient is fine.
Step 4
Change one thing, then wait
Skin turnover means a fair trial runs for weeks, not days. Removing three products at once produces a result you cannot attribute to any of them.
