The best skincare ingredient app depends on which answer you want back. Yuka, Think Dirty and EWG Skin Deep hand you a rating; INCIDecoder, SkinSort and LabelPeek hand you the ingredient list, read line by line. Six tools, checked against their own published pages on 10 August 2026.
This page states what each one reads, what data sits behind it, what it costs and who it suits, then explains why free skincare checkers exist on the web at all while food ones mostly do not. LabelPeek is our own tool, so its limits get a named section rather than a footnote.

Six skincare ingredient apps, one at a time
Each entry below names what the tool reads, the data behind it, the price, and the shopper it fits. None of them is called better or worse than another: the differences are structural, and a tool that answers one question well returns very little for a different one.
Yuka
Yuka is the scanner most people mean when they say scanner app: 28 million users in the United States and 85 million worldwide on its own press page, covering food and cosmetics in one product. Point the camera at a barcode and it returns a 0-100 score with a colour band and a suggested alternative in the same category. Premium, from $10 a year in the US, unlocks search without scanning, offline use, unlimited history and dietary filters, and neither tier carries advertising. It suits someone who wants one app for the bathroom shelf and the grocery aisle and is content with a composite figure. The constraint is the same thing that gives it reach: a bottle with no record in the database returns nothing at all.
Think Dirty
Think Dirty covers cosmetics and personal care only, and it is built the way a grocery scanner is built — barcode first, product database behind it. Scan a bottle and it returns a 0-10 rating assembled from component scores, with a per-ingredient breakdown underneath. Because the model is product-centric rather than text-centric, coverage is the binding constraint: an indie launch, a regional line or a formula changed last quarter may resolve to nothing, and there is no fallback to reading the carton in your hand. It suits a shopper who wants one number for personal care and buys mostly mainstream brands. Recovering which ingredient moved the rating means opening the breakdown and reading it.
EWG Skin Deep
EWG Skin Deep is a large cosmetic ingredient hazard database that you search rather than scan, and it is desktop-first in a way the phone-native tools are not. It returns a 1-10 hazard score with category detail underneath, free on the web. The structural detail worth knowing is that Skin Deep and EWG’s Food Scores are separate databases with separate interfaces and separate scoring, never combined in one tool, so a single search box does not span both. The score is EWG’s own published methodology rather than a regulatory rating. It suits research at a desk before a purchase, and it suits following one ingredient across many products rather than judging one bottle quickly.
INCIDecoder
INCIDecoder is a web ingredient reference of roughly 1,021 pages, written as editorial explanations rather than generated from a database, and there is no app. Paste an ingredient list and it builds a decoded page with one entry per ingredient, each linking to what the material does in a formula. It also publishes its own page on why ingredient matching breaks on trade names and truncated names, which is a franker statement of the limits than most tools make. It suits reading one ingredient properly, at leisure. It issues no overall verdict, covers no food, and will not tell you whether a whole formula clears a particular list; the INCIDecoder and SkinSort comparison covers that gap.
SkinSort
SkinSort runs over 27,000 ingredients alongside product pages and several separate web tools, free and without an account. Breadth is the point: an ingredient name, a product, or a pasted list all have somewhere to land, and the ingredient pages connect through to the products containing them. That programmatic corpus is also why SkinSort can occupy two to four slots in a single results page — an ingredient page, a product page and a tool page for the same query. It suits someone moving between an ingredient and the products that use it. The trade against INCIDecoder is depth per entry: many more pages, less editorial writing behind each one.
LabelPeek
LabelPeek is a website with three free checkers that run entirely in your browser, with no account, no upload and nothing sent anywhere. The skin one matches a pasted INCI list against a published pore-clogging list of 86 entries, and that list is printed in full on the same page as the checker, with its version date. The output has three states rather than two: matched, recognised but not on the list, and not recognised at all, reported as a count instead of folded into a clean result. An app with a camera and a larger reference is planned; it was not in any store as of 10 August 2026, so the web checkers are what exists today.
Which one to open, by question
Start from the question, not the feature list. A rating and an explanation are answers to different questions, and a tool that gives one cannot give the other without becoming a different tool. Six questions cover most of the reasons someone opens a skincare scanner app in the first place.

The last row is the one that decides the choice most often. A newly launched product, an imported carton, a decant, a sample sachet or a discontinued line can all be invisible to a barcode database while their ingredient list sits in plain sight on the packaging.
Why a skincare label can be checked in a browser and a grocery label cannot
A cosmetic label is text. The full INCI list is printed on the carton, so the data a checker needs is already in your hand, and matching it against a reference is arithmetic a browser can do. A grocery barcode is a pointer: it means nothing at all without a server holding the record it points at.
The carton carries its own data
INCI is a shared naming convention, so one material has one spelling on every package in every country. A cosmetic checker needs a vocabulary of names, not an inventory of products.

Thirteen digits say nothing about what is inside. Something has to map that number to a declared ingredient list, and that mapping lives on a server that someone maintains and pays for.
Which is why the free tools differ
Cosmetic references can exist as ordinary web pages. Food checkers need an index over millions of items kept current through every reformulation, so the free ones are crowd-sourced or institutional.
A cosmetic label is the data. A grocery barcode is a receipt for data held somewhere else. That one difference decides whether a checker can run on your device or needs a database behind it.
This also explains the shape of the category. Skincare has many free web references and few long-lived free scanners, because the cheap thing to build is a page and the expensive thing is a product index. Food is the mirror image, which is why the wider roundup of checkers that cover food too is dominated by barcode tools.

That number is deliberately small, and a longer list would not be a more authoritative one. It would be a different compilation, drawn from different testing traditions, and the honest way to publish either is to show the entries rather than the count.
What no comedogenic list can settle
No regulator anywhere issues or certifies a comedogenic ingredient list. Comedogenicity is not a regulated category, so every list in circulation is a private compilation with an author, a method and a cut-off date, and two careful lists contradict each other on the same ingredient. Any app’s answer is therefore a statement about its own list.
The practical consequence is a single question to ask of any skincare scanner app: does it print the list it used, and does that list carry a version date? A checker that names its source can be argued with entry by entry. A checker that returns a number without the list behind it can only be believed or ignored, and belief is a poor basis for a decision about your own face. How the 0-5 comedogenic scale works sets out where those numbers came from and what the original assay was measuring.
Concentration is the second thing no list carries. An ingredient list is ordered, not quantified, so the same material appears identically at fifteen per cent and at a trace, and a rating produced on a neat material says little about a formula using a fraction of it. The published pore-clogging list states both limits on the page next to the checker rather than in a disclaimer at the bottom.
Where LabelPeek is the wrong choice
LabelPeek is the wrong choice for scanning a bottle in a shop. There is no barcode database behind the web checkers, the ingredient text has to be pasted in by hand, and the app was not listed in any store as of 10 August 2026. For pointing a phone at a shelf, a released scanner is the right tool.
It is also the wrong tool for learning what an ingredient does. LabelPeek reports membership of a published list, not what a material contributes to a formula, so a question like what niacinamide is for belongs to an editorial reference. And it issues no rating at all, which is exactly what some people want from a skincare app.

None of this is medical advice, and none of it is a verdict on any named brand’s product. This page describes what six tools read and where each one stops; whether a particular product suits your skin depends on your own circumstances, and on a dermatologist when the stakes warrant one.
