The register is unusual for the category — written rather than generated, and willing to say when the evidence is thin. It is also the only tool here that publishes a page about why ingredient matching breaks on trade names and truncated names, a caveat most of the category leaves the reader to discover alone. EWG Skin Deep, a scored cosmetic database

EWG Skin Deep is a large cosmetic ingredient database that publishes its own hazard scores for ingredients and for finished products. It is desktop-first in layout, and it is kept separate from EWG’s Food Scores database — the two are never combined in one tool, so a household checking a shampoo and a cereal box works in two places. Its scope is the widest of the five and its method is its own: a score is EWG’s editorial judgement expressed as a number, with the reasoning on the ingredient page rather than inside the number. LabelPeek, one list, printed on the page

LabelPeek is a website with three free checkers that run entirely in the browser, with no account and nothing uploaded. The skincare side matches a pasted INCI list against a published pore-clogging list of 86 entries; the food side matches a pasted label against 74 markers of industrial processing. The list is printed in full on the same page as the checker, so a match can be verified by eye instead of trusted. The output carries three states rather than two, which is the whole point of the design. An app with a camera and a larger reference is planned, and it was not in any store as of 10 August 2026 — the web checkers are what exists today.

These two are not competitors in the ordinary sense. INCIDecoder answers what an ingredient is, LabelPeek answers whether a name appears on one published list, and a careful reader ends up using both. Where LabelPeek is the wrong choice

LabelPeek is the wrong tool the moment the question turns into why. It reports membership in a printed list and a count of what it could not read; it does not explain what an ingredient does in an emulsion, or how concentration changes that. For chemistry, an editorial reference is the right tool.

It is also the wrong tool for anything product-level. There is no product database behind the site, so it cannot tell you which moisturiser matches a routine, find a dupe, or remember what you looked at last week. Databases with product pages exist for exactly that, and comparing a single-purpose checker against them on coverage is not a comparison worth making.

On comedogenicity it will disagree with other tools, and that disagreement is structural. No regulator anywhere issues or certifies a comedogenic list, published lists contradict each other on the same ingredient, and the numbers themselves come from testing traditions explained in the comedogenic rating scale.
